Speech and Communication

In a center of rehabilitation, people with a Neuro Muscular disease are treated in a special team. Within this group, people with ALS have a special place in particular by the often rapid and dramatic progress of the disease process.

A neuro muscular team exists of a rehabilitation doctor, a psychologist, a social worker, a physiotherapist, an occupational therapist, a speech therapist and a neurologist.

The support of people with ALS requires a specific approach. The often rapid deterioration and the bad prognosis create a demand for guidance in many areas. The great fatigability requires brief contacts, taking into consideration the load-bearing capacity of the patient and his surroundings. We must strive for a situation that makes it possible for people to stay at home as long as possible in an acceptable way. The intensity of the support depends on the request for help of the patient and can be very intensive, but will often be less at the end because the support within their own circle is wanted above all. If long-term treatment is desired, it will be sought for as close as possible and if required at home.
